Do I have to be a member of the church to be baptized or have my child baptized?** Membership is not a requirement for baptism in The United Methodist Church. Being a Christian disciple through regular church involvement is important to the Christian faith. When baptizing children, parents commit to raising the child as part of a church community. If you are interested in joining the church, please share that with the pastor helping you with baptism arrangements. **4\. Does the baptism have to be during a church service?** Yes, unless there is a particular disability or special need that prevents holding a baptism during regular worship services. In baptism, the congregation makes a commitment to you – to walk with you in the faith journey and to support your family. For this reason, the gathered congregation should always be part of the baptism ritual. Baptisms may be scheduled at any of our regular Sunday services, but may not be available on some dates due to special events. Baptisms are generally not scheduled on the first Sunday of any month due to Communion, but exceptions can be made for special family circumstances. Families are asked to meet with one of our pastors before the date of their sacrament. **6\. Should we have godparents for our child's baptism?** In The United Methodist Church we don’t have “godparents” per se, but we do have baptismal sponsors. If you’re looking for a church home, perhaps you’ve found it today. If you’re passing through, we’re pleased to have you as our guest. If you have a ministry need, we offer ourselves to you. Music features organ, piano, chancel choir, brass ensemble, and bells. During summer, 10:30 worship is outdoors, weather permitting.   Pick up both a gift bag as a thank you for your presence and also information on our church so you can learn more about us. Connect with others while enjoying a cup of fair-trade coffee and a treat. We love children in worship! Our hope is that both children and adults feel valued at church. We have activities and a play area in the worship center for young children. Also know we welcome your children in our Sunday morning programming (Sept through May), even on your first Sunday. You will fill out a short sign-in when you arrive. Nursery is provided for children aged six weeks to three years at the 9 am and 10:30 am gathering. Once signed in, you'll receive a pager. The Woodbury location has two parking lots, one right off Steepleview and one on the back side of the building. The best doors to enter are doors #1 and #2 off these parking lots. The doors say "hello & welcome." You will find that children are particularly comfortable in worship at The Grove, and we celebrate their presence even when it means a little extra chatter. We also honor the presence of those with disabilities. You will likely notice our care and inclusiveness. We understand that visiting a church for the first time can be a bit tricky. Every church has its own ways of doing things and visitors kind of jump into the flow. When you visit The Grove, we hope you'll feel welcomed but not overwhelmed. We hope to answer any questions you might have, and we'll try to be explicit about some of our habits and happenings during worship. Sometimes guests like to know what the typical person wears to worship. We want you to wear what makes you feel comfortable. You will find some people in their "Sunday best," others in jeans and tennis shoes, and everything in between. We serve communion on the first Sunday of the month. Since communion is about grace, it's open to everyone, including children, people from other faith traditions, and people who are still working out their faith. We use exclusively gluten-free bread and grape juice. Worship is important at The Grove; it's how we come together as a larger community to honor each other and connect with God. But the church exists wherever we are in the world, so throughout the week, we have lots of opportunities for learning, serving and connecting. For some, this might mean taking a deeper dive into the church's beliefs and values to know if it's the right fit. In order to know whether The Grove is that fit for you, we invite you to discover and explore what we're about. We honor the sacred dignity and worth of persons of every age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability or disability, educational, economic, and marital status, and those impacted by addiction, physical, or mental health challenges. We recognize that faith is a journey of trust & transformation, where beliefs are formed and reformed in community. Both locations of The Grove United Methodist Church have a towering gathering of trees which have stood as sentinels across our centuries, from the Wahpekute Dakota people who first stewarded the land... to circuit rider services... to the original chicken suppers... to camp revivals... to 4th of July picnics... to family camping... to pig roasts... to summer Grove worship... to bonfires by teenagers... to preschool children playing in the leaves and running through sprinklers. These groves speak to who we are as a faith community. Our church buildings in Woodbury and Cottage Grove help us create incredible ministry, but our name, The Grove, reminds us that Jesus' church extends beyond the walls of the building; it extends into all of creation. We truly are of the land, the community, and part of the natural world. The church was established in 1853 by German immigrants, who faced epidemics, cold winters, and the struggle to clear forestland for farmland. The grove at the Woodbury Campus was the site of camp meetings and revivals, which gained momentum during the Second Great Awakening in American Christendom. In 1857, Woodbury held its first of many Camp meetings, which lasted at least a week at a time. It is said that the soil of the Grove is saturated with prayers from all the families who experienced Christ through camp revivals, and the trees' branches hold their hopes and dreams. We are motivated to live into a revival spirit, to expect transformation, and to witness lives changing. Throughout the generations, our forebears insisted on preserving the trees, recognizing the incredible power of people coming together in nature to worship and build relationships. Our forebears left us instructions about maintaining, caring for, and replacing the trees. In historical documents, they remind us that our green spaces should be used for worship and picnics. We live into the spirit of those who went before us by preserving nature, creating relationships and praising God. Like the trees, we are a gathered community, offering each other shelter, nourishment and sanctuary. As a church, we are deeply rooted and always growing. To help meet this need, The Grove has partnered with SoWashCo CARES (Community Action Reaching Every Student), the South Washington County School District and Washington County to provide access to free meals through Skoolie Family Fun Nights at Royal Oaks and Armstrong Elementary schools during the summer. The Grove is a collection site for several organizations.   You can drop off donations Monday-Friday 8am-3pm or Sunday mornings at the Woodbury campus. The Compassion and Justice Team inspires, supports, and connects faith to action, igniting hope to end suffering and injustice in our local and global communities. We accomplish this through education, advocacy, empowerment, direct service, and financial resource allocation. *Scholarships available for high school students and young adults* Each summer, students and adults of The Grove go on a mission trip to another part of the country. Participants focus on serving others while challenging their own assumptions and biases. Genuine relationship is at the heart of the trip as students and adults make connections with each other and those from different backgrounds. The Grove Pride Team advocates for full inclusion and affirmation of LGBT+ people in our church and community by initiating conversations, celebrating diversity, promoting education, advocating justice and challenging anti-LGBT+ prejudice, bigotry and hate. All are welcome to join the PRIDE team! The Grove uses the following resources as discussion starters in our work of advocating for equal rights of persons who identify as LGBTQIA.   [The Gender Unicorn](https://transstudent.org/gender/) teaching tool breaks the big concept of gender into bite-sized pieces. Occasionally workshops are offered using Gender Unicorn.  Developed by the PRIDE team, Rainbow Revelations is a small group study that uses social media video, podcasts, and discussion to motivate us to faithfully affirm and advocate for those who identify as LGBTQIA. The vision of the Grove Sustainability Project is that by 2030, The Grove will be recognized in the community as a leader in conservation, sustainability, renewable energy and an advocate for Climate Justice. The Grove UMC established a sustainability committee in 2017 to continue implementing sustainable practices within the church following the addition of solar panels to the roof in 2016. The team also began holding annual events in 2017 to provide the Woodbury community with informational opportunities to understand climate change and other important environmental issues. Each year in the spring, The Grove Sustainability Project sponsors Creation Care Sunday, a special service focused on stewardship of creation and environmental justice. In 2021, the team changed its name to The Grove Sustainability Project to reflect our enhanced mission to expand outreach about sustainability matters within the church and the greater Woodbury and East Metro communities.  The Grove UMC has earned a City of Woodbury Environmental Excellence Award and is a Certified Cool Congregation and Climate Justice Congregation by Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light.  **2017 -** Climate Change and Renewable Energy (with MNIPL) **2019 -** Healing Minnesota Stories (with Rev. As disciples of Jesus Christ who honor the sacred worth of every person, The Grove United Methodist Church seeks to love our neighbors through education and action that heal our broken world. We advocate for racial justice and equity, nurture cultural transformation, and work toward an inclusive and beloved community.  At The Grove, we believe growing goodness includes growing justice. Our Racial Justice Team helps our congregation live into Jesus’ call to love God and neighbor by learning, listening, and taking action together. This work is spiritual work and it deepens our understanding of God’s image in every person and calls us to dismantle systems that harm and divide. We build awareness and understanding through **book and film discussions, and guided conversations, and field trips locally and nationally** that help us see the world through one another’s eyes.  We put our faith into action through **partnerships with local organizations and neighboring congregations**, joining ongoing efforts that promote equity, inclusion, and community healing.  Together, we strive to embody God’s transforming love in tangible ways, within The Grove and beyond.  The Racial Justice Team meets monthly to plan, learn, and discern next steps. Whether you’re just beginning to explore this work or have long been engaged in it, you are welcome here.  To learn more or get involved, contact Pastor Laura (lhannah@thegrovemn.church)  The People of The Grove United Methodist Church acknowledge that our church sites are located on the ancestral home of the Wahpekute Dakota people who continue to live on and steward this land as they have for generations. We acknowledge the history of trauma the Dakota people suffered due to unjust practices by the government of the United States and complicity of North American Christianity including progenitors of the United Methodist Church. This trauma is not just historic, it is also generational and contemporary. These unjust practices are inconsistent with The Grove’s mission to Grow Goodness. We acknowledge the sanctity of Dakota heritage, their connection to the land and their unique ability to serve as examples of land stewardship as well as supportive, connected communities. Caring staff celebrate and cultivate each child’s and family’s unique experience in a play-based setting with an emphasis on nature. Seeds of confidence, curiosity, and compassion are planted so children are prepared for kindergarten and beyond. For those six-weeks to 35 months, options include a two-day per week program on Tuesdays and Thursdays or three-day program on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. For those three by September 1, options include two-day, three-day, or five-day per week programs. For those four by September 1, options include two-day, three-day, or five-day per week programs. For those five by September 1, options include a three-day or five-day per week program. **Play-Based-** Children learn best through play. Research indicates that nature play, in particular, has strong ties to cognitive development, emotional regulation, and independence. Free play encourages engagement, imagination, cooperation, and connection to the natural world.   **Commitment to the Whole Child** - Parents often seek preschools which prepare their children for school success, and Woodbury Preschool at The Grove aligns its practices to District 833's kindergarten expectations. But even more than simply practicing the ABSs, the foundations of lifelong well-being are rooted in fostering a child's sense of self, providing opportunities for social interaction, and nurturing creativity and curiosity.   **Diversity and Inclusion -** We honor the sacred worth and dignity of families of every age race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical and mental capacity, education, economic, and marital status. **Professionalism of Staff -** Parents consistently praise Woodbury Preschool at The Grove's staff for the genuine care, joy, and sensitivity they radiate. Teachers and aides all meet the educational and training criteria for licensing and accreditation, and many have education and training beyond these requirements.   **Low Ratios** \- Woodbury Preschool at The Grove offers very low child-to-adult ratios, prioritizing responsive caregiving that is extremely important to a child's social and emotional development, physical well-being, and overall development.   As a ministry of The Grove Church, the preschool's mission is to nurture all children into people who grow goodness in the world. Early seeds of goodness are planted, faith roots sprout, and eventually children grow into people who can make big positive differences in the world. Through songs, prayers, and a large group gathering time, the following roots of faith are emphasized.  Woodbury Preschool at The Grove is wonderful school! A play-based preschool Sunday school is a joyful, hands-on approach to early faith formation that meets young children right where they are—through movement, music, creative art, and story.  During Stepping Stones, children experience spiritual practices which open them up to God's grace. Stepping Stones provide parents and the church a way to fulfill their commitment to nurture children in faith. When kids participate in something specific to a Stepping Stone, they receive a stone to mark that experience: each time they take communion, watch a baptism, lead prayer or song in worship, participate in a workshop, or engage in service. Kids will have special boxes to hold their stones. Kids come ready to do crafts play and make connections with other Grove Kids! Activities include, but are never limited to: extra playtime outside, floor hockey inside, building forts, building towers and lots of craft & creative opportunities! Several Times a year we provide equipping parent meetings that provide a free lunch and special activities for children. This is a time for parents to get to know each other, children to play together more and for your family to thrive. Young families can enjoy free food and activities year-round. Nursery care is provided by a certified caregiver on Sunday mornings during 9 and 10:30 am worship. After signing in your child, you receive a pager.  Meet us in The Grove for stories, crafts, and playground fun. For kids ages 6 and under. No registration is needed. Kids will experience art, story, worship, games, and crafts. VBS is held the first week of August. WPG offers morning camps during the first three weeks in June for students ages 4 and 5 who have had previous preschool experience. Optional pizza served at 6 pm, suggested donation of $1 per slice.  **Faith-formation journey where students consider saying yes to vows made by parents at baptism**  Students can be confirmed in the fall of their 10th grade year (or anytime after).  Those wishing to be confirmed participate in Wednesday evening student ministry, having ten meetings with the Pastors during small group time.  In addition, 6th through 9th graders are encouraged to participate in the following events as part of confirmation preparation: · Service to our community through coffee hour and the Easter Pancake Breakfast. Three times per year, parents are invited to attend so that they can learn about our program and have time to connect for support and learning regarding current issues that may affect their family. **For students who completed grades 5-9. Friends are welcome!** Students volunteer in community service projects in the morning and return for lunch and then fun activities in the afternoon. Past projects have included: RSA Community Gardens, Feed My Starving Children, thrift stores, and senior programs. Past afternoon activities have included Cascade Bay, Sky Zone, bowling and Valley Fair. We believe that students thrive in their faith and life when they are given opportunities to lead. Here are 3 ways we provide this: Grades 6-12: Team LEAD (Learn, Experience, Advocate, Disciple) **For students who completed grade 9 and up; Adults of all ages** For over 30 years, our church has sent a team to Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Project).  Through dedication to rural life ministry in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee, our participants are transformed as they experience the needs of others. Students get an opportunity to serve a community through a well-established organization that is within 6-8 hours of home. The Woodbury we know today was only a wilderness. These first settlers established the German Methodist Church in 1855. Shortly after, the Woodbury Methodist Cemetery was added to the church property just east of the current building. There are no written records of exactly where those early settlers were but we know the names. These remains are located in an area known as The Pioneer Section. There are many stone monuments but we know there are also many unmarked graves. Wooden markers were often used and they have disappeared. The cemetery was formally platted and registered with the State of Minnesota in 1895. Although the cemetery is classified as Methodist, we are open to all faiths, races, and nationalities. There are several former ministers buried here and a soldier who fought for Napolean and the Civil War. For more information about services, please contact The Grove UMC. You choose if you want to be in a group that meets twice per month or once per month. Content is mostly group directed but the church also provides you with a discussion guide. Groups will participate in two service projects a year of their choosing. Groups will celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and support each other when needed. Pastors Kelly, Jeremy & Laura will teach this class on rotation Grow and nurture your spirituality by blending the study of scripture with books about Christian faith.  Join others to study Bible lessons from the time of ancient Israel through Jesus’ ministry, and the Development of Christianity to the present day. Persons unable to attend class sessions may subscribe to the weekly Disciple Notes newsletter **Pop Up Core Studies, offered during Lent & other times in the year** **Making Sense of the Bible** \- Utilizing a book by United Methodist pastor, Adam Hamilton, this study gives grounding in what the Bible is and isn't and different interpretation lens **Reckless Love** \- Utilizing a book by United Methodist pastor, Tom Berlin, this study inspires us to understand God's grace and how to love others **Rainbow Revelations** - Developed by the PRIDE team, this study uses social media video, podcasts, and discussion to motivate us to faithfully affirm and advocate for those who identify as LGBTQIA. **COMING SOON!** A study about our Christian life and being an anti-racist is being developed by Racial Justice Expand your thinking by studying books focused on faith, society, and justice. Join lively discussion on faith, family, and the challenges of daily living. Deepen your spiritual life through scripture and community. Please connect with The Grove’s Director of Caring Ministries for individual support, resources and notice of upcoming grief support events (book studies, grief workshops, etc.).  Caregiving can be difficult, lonely, and emotionally and physically exhausting. There is hope! Gain support, understanding and friendship from people who are going through or have gone through similar situations. People whose life has been impacted by the addictive behaviors of a loved one come together to provide connection for mutual support & encouragement in a confidential setting. Please connect with The Grove’s Director of Caring Ministries for notice of upcoming gatherings, workshops or resources.  Guided Christian meditation can increase your connection to God and give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health. For individuals and families living with Autism/Asperger’s, and for anyone with disabilities or social challenges who likes music, rhythm and dance. Provide emotional and spiritual support to others as a lay volunteer Congregational Care Minister (CCM) serving on our visitation team. CCM’s work alongside our pastors in providing care, such as following up on prayer requests, making visits, providing a Sunday morning presence for connection & prayer, phoning folks in need of contact, and meeting one-on-one to offer prayers & encouragement to persons in need of a listening ear. The Prayer Connection Team exists to present the praises and petitions of our church & community before the Lord. This team is notified of prayer requests via email so that they may lift up prayers as requested by the congregation or community. Through a carefully organized program, our hands can extend the love of God by offering short-term help to our church family members in need of transportation (to church or medical appointments), meals (following surgery or during an immediate crisis), grocery shopping or assistance in other tangible ways. Create (knit or crochet) prayer squares or prayer shawls for persons in need of care as a tangible expression of love & concern. Send cards to members of our congregation who live alone, are homebound, or live in assisted & nursing care centers. At The Grove, we consider a wedding ceremony a special and sacred event that is all about God’s work in your new life together. **I'm interested in having my wedding officiated by one of The Grove's pastors. What do I do?** [Reach out](/staff) directly to the pastor you'd like to officiate. If you are unsure, reach out to the church office. **Do I have to be married at the church in order for a Grove pastor to officiate my wedding?** Grove pastors frequently officiate weddings off-site. Sometimes travel time is a limiting factor. **Can I have my wedding at The Grove if it's not officiated by a Grove pastor?** Only pastors affiliated with The Grove and other United Methodist pastors may officiate weddings on church property. Exceptions can be made with approval. **Do The Grove's pastors officiate same-gender weddings?** The Grove Pastors commit to supporting and celebrating same-gender marriages in the same way that we support and celebrate other marriages. Pastors at The Grove are honored to officiate same-gender weddings to celebrate love and commitment. As with any wedding conducted, supportive premarital counseling and thoughtful wedding planning is available. **How do we arrange for premarital counseling or our marriage preparation course?** The Grove pastors feel premarital counseling is important. They will either provide the counseling themselves, refer you to an affiliated pastor who conducts premarital counseling, or ask you to seek secular premarital counseling or a marriage preparation course. The pastor officiating the wedding will work with you on personalizing your ceremony so it is special and unique to you. The order of worship includes: a greeting, declaration of intent, vows, prayers, Scripture reading, and a short message. Other elements might include: exchange of rings, family blessing/commitment, music, announcement of marriage, and other readings. Wedding ceremonies take place in the worship center, historic chapel, or outside in the grove. For weddings conducted by Grove pastors, pricing varies from $250-$400 depending on the location picked. If the wedding is officiated by a different pastor, the pricing varies from $500-$1500 depending on the spaces used and time they are used for. **How much does it cost to have a wedding officiated by a Grove pastor?** Each pastor determines their own costs based on preparation, rehearsal, travel, and ceremony. Prices typically range from $250 to $750. The fellowship hall, atrium, plaza, outdoor grove, and kitchen can be signed out for receptions. No alcohol or smoking is allowed on The Grove's property. Meals must be catered by an outside business. At The Grove, these terms are used interchangeably to describe the worship service where a deceased loved one's life is honored and celebrated, where people come together to support each other in grief, and where people renew and strengthen their faith in God's love. The Grove offers pre-planning for those who desire that. A visitation is a gathering of family and friends prior to the memorial service. If a body is present, the visitation allows those grieving the opportunity to view the body. If the deceased has been cremated, the cremains are often present in an urn at the visitation. Most, but not all, visitations at The Grove are held immediately preceding the funeral. At The Grove, these terms are used interchangeably to describe a short service at the gravesite. Often prayers and readings are offered, along with special rituals of the families choosing. Graveside services can be held immediately after the service, after the luncheon, or at another date. Often after the funeral, a luncheon or reception is offered by the family to those who have come. This is a time for worshippers to share memories with each other. If a full luncheon is desired, the family will cater the meal to The Grove. If a simpler reception is desired, The Grove can organize and provide bars/cookies and beverages at cost to the family. In both cases, The Grove provides a serving staff. Recognizing the loss of a loved one is difficult, our hope is to support you on the path of grief, providing a listening ear, prayer, and spiritual care. If you would like to connect with our Director of Care or pastors, please reach out at any time. Throughout the year after the loss, you will also receive touch-point contacts. This primary stewardship commitment supports the operating budget, including salaries for pastors and staff, mortgage, utilities, supplies, and maintenance. Each October, we ask you to make a commitment (an estimate of giving for the coming year). As you plan your giving, please make this your most important commitment. This commitment supports ministry beyond the local church. Last year, Being the Hope funds supported 35 agencies and ministries, such as Friends in Need, Christian Cupboard, and Neighborhood House. This yearly effort supports major improvements beyond the capacity of our operating budget.
